Day Trip Itinerary From Moshi To Materuni
A day trip from Moshi to Materuni Waterfall is a fantastic way to explore the natural beauty of the Kilimanjaro region while enjoying an adventure-filled day. Materuni Waterfall is located in the village of Materuni, approximately 15 km from Moshi, and is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the area, set against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro.
7:00 AM – PICK-UP FROM HOTEL
Duration: 30–45 minutes
Begin your day by having an early breakfast at your hotel or Lodge in Moshi. Your guide and driver will pick you up at your hotel. Ensure you are ready to depart at this time to maximize your day. The drive to Materuni takes about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic and road conditions.
8:00 AM – DRIVE TO MATERUNI VILLAGE
Duration: 45 minutes to 1 hour
The journey will take you through lush, green landscapes, small local villages, and coffee plantations, giving you an excellent opportunity to take in the natural beauty of the region. On the way, you might catch glimpses of Mount Kilimanjaro, particularly on clear days, providing stunning views. The roads are mostly dirt roads, so expect a bumpy but scenic drive.
9:00 AM – ARRIVAL AT MATERUNI VILLAGE AND WELCOME BRIEFING
Duration: 20–30 minutes
Upon arrival at the Materuni village, your guide will give you an overview of the area’s history, the waterfall, and the coffee-growing process. Materuni is a small, charming village located at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, and it is known for its rich coffee culture. You will also be introduced to the local people, and if interested, you can also learn about traditional Chagga culture.
9:30 AM – Coffee Tour (Optional)
Duration: 1 hour
Optional Add-on: If you’re a coffee enthusiast, consider taking a tour of the village’s coffee plantation. The coffee tour will take you through the stages of coffee cultivation—from planting, harvesting, and processing to roasting the beans. You’ll also have a chance to sample some of the freshest coffee in the region.
10:30 AM – START THE HIKE TO MATERUNI WATERFALL
Duration: 40–60 minutes (depends on your pace)
After your coffee tour (or straight away if you skip the coffee tour), you will begin your hike to Materuni Waterfall. The trail begins from the village and takes you through scenic landscapes, including forest paths and small streams. The hike is moderate, with some steep sections, so wear comfortable hiking shoes.
Along the way, your guide will point out local flora and fauna, including native plants and birds. As you approach the waterfall, you’ll hear the roar of the water before you catch your first sight of the 80-meter-high (262 feet) cascade.
11:30 AM – ENJOY MATERUNI WATERFALL
Duration: 30–60 minutes
Once at the waterfall, you can take in the stunning view of the water cascading down the rocks. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can dip your feet in the cool pool at the base of the waterfall, or even swim if the conditions allow (though the water is often chilly).
The surrounding area is peaceful and serene, perfect for taking photographs and enjoying the natural beauty. Take your time here to relax and appreciate the waterfall’s surroundings.
12:30 PM – RETURN TO MATERUNI VILLAGE
Duration: 40–60 minutes
After spending some time at the waterfall, you will hike back to Materuni village. You may want to take a different route on the return leg to see more of the local area.
1:30 PM – LUNCH IN MATERUNI VILLAGE
Duration: 1 hour
Lunch will reserves from lunch box, though there is an option to enjoy a traditional Tanzanian lunch in the village. Many tours include a meal prepared by local women, offering a chance to taste Chagga dishes like ugali (cornmeal porridge), ndizi (plantains), and nyama choma (grilled meat), often served with fresh vegetables.
If you’re vegetarian or have dietary preferences, you can inform your guide beforehand to ensure a suitable meal is prepared.
2:30 PM – VISIT MATERUNI VILLAGE
Duration: 30 minutes
After lunch, take a short walk around the village to experience local life. You may meet the villagers, visit small markets, or observe traditional farming practices. If you’re interested, you can buy handmade crafts or locally grown products, including coffee, to take home as souvenirs.
3:00 PM – DEPART MATERUNI FOR MOSHI
Duration: 45 minutes to 1 hour
After a relaxing and enriching day, it’s time to return to Moshi. Your guide will drive you back along the same scenic route.
4:00 PM – ARRIVE BACK IN MOSHI
You’ll arrive back at your hotel or desired location in Moshi by late afternoon.
You can choose to relax for the rest of the day, or if you prefer, explore Moshi town.

- Waterproof jacket or poncho: The weather can be unpredictable, and it might rain, especially during the rainy season.
