The Machame Route is typically completed in 6 or 7 days. A 7-day itinerary is recommended for better acclimatization.

Lemosho Route Itinerary

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

  • Elevation: 1,640m to 2,850m (5,380ft to 9,350ft)
  • Distance: 11 km (6.8 miles)
  • Time: 5-7 hours

Your journey begins at Machame Gate, where you’ll register with park authorities. The trek starts in a dense rainforest, home to colobus monkeys and exotic birds. After a steady climb, you’ll arrive at Machame Camp, nestled in the trees.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

  • Elevation: 2,850m to 3,810m (9,350ft to 12,500ft)
  • Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)
  • Time: 4-6 hours

The rainforest gives way to heather and moorland, with epic views of Shira Plateau. This shorter hike allows for a good acclimatization day. You’ll camp at Shira Camp, surrounded by stunning mountain landscapes.

Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower (Acclimatization) to Barranco Camp

  • Elevation: 3,810m to 4,630m to 3,976m (12,500ft to 15,190ft to 13,044ft)
  • Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
  • Time: 6-7 hours

This is a crucial acclimatization day. You’ll climb to Lava Tower at 4,630m, experiencing the first real effects of altitude. After a break, you’ll descend to Barranco Camp, giving your body time to adjust while surrounded by spectacular views of the Barranco Wall.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

  • Elevation: 3,976m to 3,995m (13,044ft to 13,106ft)
  • Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)
  • Time: 4-5 hours

The day begins with a steep but manageable climb up the Barranco Wall. Though it looks intimidating, it’s a fun scramble with rewarding panoramas. After crossing valleys and ridges, you’ll reach Karanga Camp, an essential acclimatization stop.

(📌 Note: If doing the 6-day itinerary, you’ll continue to Barafu Camp on this day.)

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

  • Elevation: 3,995m to 4,673m (13,106ft to 15,331ft)
  • Distance: 4 km (2.5 miles)
  • Time: 3-4 hours

A shorter but crucial hike that takes you to Barafu Camp, the launch point for your summit attempt. You’ll rest here before the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (Summit) to Mweka Camp

  • Elevation: 4,673m to 5,895m to 3,100m (15,331ft to 19,341ft to 10,170ft)
  • Distance: 17 km (10.6 miles)
  • Time: 10-14 hours

This is the most challenging day! You’ll start the final push at midnight, trekking in freezing temperatures under a starry sky. After reaching Stella Point at sunrise, a final 1-hour climb takes you to Uhuru Peak – the highest point in Africa!

After celebrating and taking photos, you’ll descend to Mweka Camp for some well-earned rest.

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

  • Elevation: 3,100m to 1,640m (10,170ft to 5,380ft)
  • Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
  • Time: 3-4 hours

The final descent takes you back through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate before heading back to Moshi.
