Tour Overview: Kilimanjaro Climb Lemosho Route Day Trip

Day Trip Itinerary From Moshi To Climb Mount Kilimanjaro Via Lemosho Route

The Lemosho Route is considered one of the most scenic and diverse routes for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. It begins on the western side of the mountain, passing through lush rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert as it gradually ascends. While the Lemosho route is typically completed over a period of 7-8 days, a day trip itinerary from Moshi can only cover the initial portion of the route, typically the segment from the Lemosho Gate to Shira Camp 1. This allows you to experience the beautiful landscapes and unique ecosystems of Kilimanjaro, but completing the entire route or reaching the summit in a single day is not feasible.

Day trip doesn’t involve summiting, it is an excellent way to explore the beauty of Kilimanjaro, especially for those interested in shorter, yet still challenging, treks. The journey from the Lemosho Gate through the rainforest and onto the open moorlands of the Shira Plateau provides a memorable experience of the mountain’s rich natural heritage.

5:00 AM – 6:00 AM: PICK-UP FROM HOTEL IN MOSHI

Pick-up Location: Your hotel in Moshi or a designated meeting point.  A private vehicle (such as a safari jeep or van) will take you to the Lemosho Gate, located on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro. The drive from Moshi to the Lemosho Gate is about 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on road conditions.

6:00 AM – 8:00 AM: ARRIVE AT LEMOSHO GATE

Upon arrival at the Lemosho Gate (at an elevation of about 2,100 meters / 6,900 feet), you and your group will need to register with the Kilimanjaro National Park authorities. Your guide will manage the paperwork, and you’ll need to show your climbing permit and passport.

Your guide will provide an orientation about the day’s hike, safety protocols, and how to handle the altitude. You’ll also go over important instructions about the trek. Ensure you have all necessary items for the day, including a good pair of hiking boots, a light jacket, sunscreen, hat, gloves, camera, snacks, and a water bottle. A porter may also carry your gear.

8:00 AM – 8:30 AM: BEGIN THE HIKE – LEMOSHO GATE TO MTI MKUBWA (BIG TREE CAMP)

The first segment of the hike takes you from the Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa, which is often referred to as the “Big Tree Camp.” This initial part of the hike is through the rainforest zone (about 2,200 meters / 7,200 feet). The distance from the gate to Mti Mkubwa is approximately 3.5 km (2.2 miles), and the ascent is gradual with an elevation gain of about 200 meters (650 feet).

The rainforest is lush and beautiful, with dense vegetation, towering trees, and the occasional glimpse of Kilimanjaro’s peaks. You may see some wildlife, such as monkeys (blue monkeys or colobus monkeys), birds, and possibly some butterflies. The hike is relatively easy, with the trail being well-maintained and not too steep. Your guide will set a slow, steady pace to help you acclimatize to the altitude.

8:30 AM – 10:00 AM: CONTINUE TO SHIRA CAMP 1

After Mti Mkubwa, you’ll continue the hike to Shira Camp 1, located at an elevation of 3,600 meters (11,800 feet). This portion of the hike takes you through a mix of heather and moorland, with some stretches that are more exposed and offer stunning panoramic views of Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscapes.

The hike from Mti Mkubwa to Shira Camp 1 is around 8 km (5 miles), and it will take approximately 3 to 4 hours. As you ascend, the terrain becomes more open with lower vegetation. You’ll pass through areas with wild grasses, shrubbery, and scattered alpine plants. Enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s western slopes and the surrounding valleys. On clear days, you may get glimpses of the Shira Plateau and even parts of the Shira Crater. The change in vegetation and terrain is quite dramatic as you ascend. You may encounter some unique wildlife such as giant heather trees, and possibly birds like the tawny eagle and verreaux’s eagle.

10:00 AM – 10:30 AM: ARRIVE AT SHIRA CAMP 1

Once you reach Shira Camp 1, your guide will set up a small resting area. While the trek continues to the summit over several days, you’ll have a chance to rest here for a short while and enjoy a packed lunch. Your guide will provide a simple meal, likely consisting of sandwiches, fruits, nuts, snacks, and plenty of water. This is a good time to hydrate and refuel.

If you have time, you can explore the area around Shira Camp 1, take some photos, and enjoy the stunning surroundings. However, remember to stay hydrated and avoid overexerting yourself.

10:30 AM – 12:00 PM: RETURN TO LEMOSHO GATE

After your break at Shira Camp 1, you will begin your descent back to the Lemosho Gate. This segment typically takes around 3 hours. The descent will be easier than the ascent, but you should still maintain a steady pace to avoid straining your knees or ankles.

On the way down, take in the sweeping views of the Kilimanjaro landscape. The forested areas and the expansive moorland are particularly scenic from this perspective.

12:30 PM – 3:00 PM: ARRIVE TO LEMOSHO GATE

Once you arrive back at the Lemosho Gate, you’ll complete the trek and sign out with the Kilimanjaro National Park authorities. Your guide will ensure all paperwork is completed. Afterward, your guide will offer a debriefing, sharing insights about the trek and answering any questions. You’ll also be able to rest and relax for a bit before heading back to Moshi.

The same vehicle will transport you back to Moshi, where you can rest and reflect on your day’s experience.

3:00 PM – 5:00 PM: RETURN TO YOUR HOTEL IN MOSHI

Drive Back to Moshi: The drive back from the Lemosho Gate to Moshi will take approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on road conditions.

Additional Considerations for the Day Trip

  • Physical Fitness and Altitude: The trek to Shira Camp 1 is relatively moderate, but the altitude can still have an impact. Even though you won’t be reaching the summit on this day trip, the 3,600-meter elevation may cause mild symptoms of altitude sickness for some individuals. It’s important to maintain a steady pace and stay hydrated.
  • Altitude Acclimatization: Since this is a relatively short trip, it’s not necessary to worry too much about acclimatization, but always listen to your body. If you start to feel lightheaded or nauseous, inform your guide immediately.
  • Weather Conditions: Kilimanjaro’s weather is unpredictable, especially at higher altitudes. Bring layers of clothing to deal with varying temperatures and weather, and be prepared for rain, wind, or even cold conditions as you ascend.
  • Physical Challenge: While the trek is moderate, it’s still a long hike, with an elevation gain of 1,500 meters (5,000 feet). Make sure you’re prepared for a physically demanding day.
  • Safety: Always hike with a certified guide. Ensure that your guide is experienced and familiar with the Lemosho Route, and that they carry a first aid kit and satellite phone for emergencies.
