Marangu Route
Marangu Route: The Easiest
Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, offers several routes to the summit, but none are quite like the Marangu Route. Often called the “Coca-Cola Route”, it is the only route with hut accommodations, making it a favorite for those who prefer not to camp.
If you’re planning to climb Kilimanjaro, this guide will cover:
- Why the Marangu Route is the easiest and most unique trail
- A detailed day-by-day itinerary
- The difficulty level and best time to go
- Essential tips for a successful summit

Why Choose the Marangu Route?
The Marangu Route is different from other Kilimanjaro trails. Instead of tents, climbers stay in dormitory-style huts, making it a preferred choice for those who want a little more comfort.
✅ Easiest Route – Gradual slopes make it the least technical trek.
✅ Only Hut-Based Trail – Stay in simple mountain huts instead of tents.
✅ Shortest Route – Can be completed in 5 or 6 days, making it more affordable.
✅ Direct & Fast – The shortest way to the summit compared to other trails.
However, there are downsides:
❌ Lower Success Rate – The fast ascent increases the risk of altitude sickness.
❌ Less Scenic – Uses the same path for ascent and descent.
❌ Can Be Crowded – Being popular, the huts fill up quickly.
Marangu Route Itinerary: A Day-by-Day Breakdown
The Marangu Route can be completed in 5 or 6 days. The 6-day itinerary is highly recommended for better acclimatization.

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
- Elevation: 1,860m to 2,715m (6,102ft to 8,907ft)
- Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
- Time: 4-5 hours
Your journey starts at Marangu Gate, where you’ll register with Kilimanjaro National Park. The trail leads through a dense rainforest, home to colobus monkeys and exotic birds. After a steady hike, you’ll reach Mandara Hut, your first night’s accommodation.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
- Elevation: 2,715m to 3,720m (8,907ft to 12,205ft)
- Distance: 12 km (7.5 miles)
- Time: 6-8 hours
Leaving the rainforest, you’ll enter the moorland zone, with incredible views of Mawenzi Peak. This long trek leads to Horombo Hut, where you’ll rest for the night.
Day 3: Acclimatization Day (Optional for 6-Day Itinerary)
If you choose the 6-day itinerary, you’ll spend an extra day at Horombo Hut for acclimatization. Many trekkers take a short hike to Zebra Rocks (4,020m) before returning to Horombo.
(Note: If doing the 5-day trek, you’ll skip this day and continue to Kibo Hut.)
Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
- Elevation: 3,720m to 4,703m (12,205ft to 15,430ft)
- Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
- Time: 6-8 hours
The landscape changes to alpine desert, with rocky terrain and little vegetation. The air gets thinner as you approach Kibo Hut, the base camp for your final summit attempt. You’ll eat early and rest because your trek to the summit begins at midnight.
Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (Summit) to Horombo Hut
- Elevation: 4,703m to 5,895m to 3,720m (15,430ft to 19,341ft to 12,205ft)
- Distance: 22 km (13.7 miles)
- Time: 10-16 hours
This is summit day! You’ll start the climb at midnight, trekking on steep scree in freezing temperatures. After reaching Gilman’s Point (5,685m), a final push leads you to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa!
After celebrating, you’ll descend back to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest.
Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
- Elevation: 3,720m to 1,860m (12,205ft to 6,102ft)
- Distance: 20 km (12.4 miles)

The final day is a long descent back through the rainforest. At Marangu Gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate before heading back to Moshi.
