Tour Packages Overview

The Marangu Route, often called the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the only Kilimanjaro route that offers hut accommodations instead of camping. It is one of the most popular and straightforward trails to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), making it ideal for trekkers who prefer a shorter, more comfortable climb. However, due to its quick ascent, it has a lower success rate than longer routes.

With Lauwo Adventures, you’ll be guided by experienced professionals who ensure your safety while making the journey enjoyable and memorable.

Highlights

  • The only route with hut accommodations, providing a more comfortable experience
  • The shortest and most direct path to the summit
  • Beautiful scenery, including lush rainforests and alpine deserts
  • A great choice for those who prefer a less physically demanding trek
  • Guided by experienced professionals to maximize safety and success

Tour Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Marangu Gate (1,860m) to Mandara Hut (2,700m)

  • Hiking Distance: 8 km (4–5 hours)
  • Habitat: Rainforest

Your journey starts with a drive from Moshi or Arusha to the Marangu Gate, where you’ll complete park registration. The trek begins with a gentle walk through the lush rainforest, home to monkeys, exotic birds, and towering trees. The trail is well-maintained, making for an easy first day.

You’ll arrive at Mandara Hut in the afternoon, where you’ll have time to rest or take a short hike to the Maundi Crater for panoramic views. Dinner and an overnight stay at the hut.

Day 2: Mandara Hut (2,700m) to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

  • Hiking Distance: 12 km (6–8 hours)
  • Habitat: Moorland

After breakfast, you’ll leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone. The landscape changes dramatically, with giant lobelias and endless rolling hills. Along the way, you’ll get your first views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.

Horombo Hut is located on a scenic plateau, providing a beautiful sunset view. Here, you’ll enjoy dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 3: Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Kibo Hut (4,703m)

  • Hiking Distance: 10 km (6–7 hours)
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Today’s trek takes you through the alpine desert, a dry and barren landscape with little vegetation. You’ll pass the “Last Water Point” at 4,130m before reaching Kibo Hut, the base camp for your summit attempt.

Upon arrival, you’ll have an early dinner and rest as much as possible before the midnight summit push. Your guide will provide a briefing on the upcoming climb and check your gear.

Day 4: Kibo Hut (4,703m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

  • Hiking Distance: 21 km (12–16 hours)
  • Habitat: Arctic (summit), Moorland (descent)

Your summit attempt begins around midnight. The climb to Uhuru Peak is the most challenging part of the trek, with steep switchbacks and freezing temperatures. After about 5-6 hours, you’ll reach Gilman’s Point (5,681m), where you’ll witness an incredible sunrise.

From Gilman’s Point, it’s a final push to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, you’ll begin the long descent back to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest.

Day 5: Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Marangu Gate (1,860m)

  • Hiking Distance: 20 km (5–6 hours)
  • Habitat: Moorland and Rainforest

The final stretch takes you back through the moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate. At the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate before returning to Moshi or Arusha for a well-deserved celebration.
