Tour Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Marangu Gate (1,860m) to Mandara Hut (2,700m)

  • Hiking Distance: 8 km (4–5 hours)
  • Habitat: Rainforest
Your adventure begins with a drive from Moshi or Arusha to the Marangu Gate, where registration takes place. The trail leads through lush rainforests filled with towering trees and playful monkeys. After an enjoyable trek, arrive at Mandara Hut, your first overnight stop.

Day 2: Mandara Hut (2,700m) to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

  • Hiking Distance: 12 km (6–8 hours)
  • Habitat: Moorland
Leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone, where the landscape transforms into grassy plains and scattered heathers. Along the way, you’ll catch your first views of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. Spend the night at Horombo Hut, which offers stunning views of the surrounding plains.

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut (3,720m)

  • Hiking Distance (Optional): 5–10 km (3–5 hours)
  • Habitat: Moorland
This acclimatization day is crucial for increasing your chances of reaching the summit. Take a short hike to Mawenzi Ridge (4,310m) for better acclimatization, then return to Horombo Hut to relax and prepare for the next stage of your trek.

Day 4: Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Kibo Hut (4,703m)

  • Hiking Distance: 10 km (6–8 hours)
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert
Trek through the saddle, a high-altitude desert located between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. The terrain becomes increasingly barren as you approach Kibo Hut, your base camp for the summit attempt. Arrive early to rest, hydrate, and prepare for the midnight ascent.

Day 5: Kibo Hut (4,703m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

  • Hiking Distance: 22 km (10–15 hours)
  • Habitat: Arctic (summit), Moorland (descent)
Your summit push begins around midnight. Trek through the darkness to reach Gilman’s Point (5,685m) at the crater rim. From there, continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, just in time to witness a spectacular sunrise. After celebrating your achievement, descend to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest.

Day 6: Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Marangu Gate (1,860m)

  • Hiking Distance: 20 km (5–7 hours)
  • Habitat: Rainforest
On your final day, trek back through the rainforest to the Marangu Gate, where you’ll receive a certificate of achievement. Celebrate your incredible accomplishment with your team before driving back to Moshi or Arusha.
